Below are some of the professional learning opportunities that Mission Public School District is offering in the 2022/2023 school year.  These can be used in-lieu of the May 19th, 2023 professional development day.

Open to All Educators: Early Learning – Gr. 12

Virtual Author Café – Legacy: Trauma, Story & Indigenous Healing

Please join us virtually for a series of four learning sessions with author Suzanne Methot, author of Legacy: Trauma, Story & Indigenous Healing. Using her book as a guide and through an Indigenous lens, Suzanne will walk us through the following:

Session #1: Trauma-Informed Practice (November 17, 2022)
In this session, we will learn about the impact of trauma on our brains, bodies, spirit, and
emotions; the difference between intergenerational trauma and complex trauma; and how
complex trauma relates to colonization and colonialism.

Session #2: Healing-Informed Strategies for Working With Youth and Families (January 12, 2023)
During this session, teachers will try out and practice 3-5 strategies that they can use when
working with students and families who have experienced, or are experiencing, trauma.

Session #3: Self-Care for Helpers (March 2, 2023)
This session will consider the impacts of intergenerational trauma on helpers and on the
teacher-student relationship, and how Indigenous culture-based strategies for creating
meaning and connection can minimize triggers and alleviate vicarious trauma, burnout, and
compassion fatigue.

Session #4: Expressive Writing for Health and Wellness (May 4, 2023)
During this workshop, teachers will use expressive writing to engage in self-care and achieve
greater emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual wellness.

Details: This learning opportunity also may count towards May in Lieu, if you commit to all four learning sessions.

Time: All sessions will start at 315pm and end at 445pm.

An Evening with sɬə́məxʷ, Rain Pierre

Please join us for an inspirational evening with sɬə́məxʷ, Rain Pierre, highly acclaimed artist and motivational speaker from Katzie First Nation.

“Five years ago, I was dedicating my time and energy to a career working in the civil engineering realm. I was working extensive overtime and travelling around British Columbia, Canada inspecting multimillion-dollar projects building bridges and highways. I gave up my free time and weekends, dedicating everything to my career. I was making a name for myself within the industry, as well as a very good salary for my age. I worked on pursuing and growing this career for 7 years. I had made it… and I should have been happy, right? 
But I wasn’t. I had worked myself into a state of depression without knowing it. I knew deep down something was wrong. I could feel that my internal self wasn’t happy. I felt like I was committing spiritual suicide.  
At the end of a long day, I asked the Creator, is this what I should be doing? Because I’m not really quite sure. That evening I got some answers.
I was sitting on the couch scrolling Facebook and saw a video someone had shared about spray paint art. It was the first time my heart fluttered for anything. I felt more alive and awake than I ever did.
“IT’S CRAZY TO THINK ABOUT WHERE I ONCE WAS IN MY LIFE. I HAD TO LET GO OF WHAT I THOUGHT I “SHOULD” BE DOING AND TOOK A LEAP TOWARDS SOMETHING THAT MAKES ME TRULY HAPPY.”

The Secret Pocket: Book Launch and Learning Session with Author Peggy Janicki

The true story of how Indigenous girls at a Canadian residential school sewed secret pockets into their dresses to hide food and survive

Mary was four years old when she was first taken away to the Lejac Indian Residential School. It was far away from her home and family. Always hungry and cold, there was little comfort for young Mary. Speaking Dakelh was forbidden and the nuns and priest were always watching, ready to punish. Mary and the other girls had a genius idea: drawing on the knowledge from their mothers, aunts and grandmothers who were all master sewers, the girls would sew hidden pockets in their clothes to hide food. They secretly gathered materials and sewed at nighttime, then used their pockets to hide apples, carrots and pieces of bread to share with the younger girls.

Based on the author’s mother’s experience at residential school, The Secret Pocket is a story of survival and resilience in the face of genocide and cruelty. But it’s also a celebration of quiet resistance to the injustice of residential schools and how the sewing skills passed down through generations of Indigenous women gave these girls a future, stitch by stitch.

This is a virtual learning series, offered by the Edith Lando Virtual Learning Centre at UBC. Organizers are Dr. Cynthia Nicol, Dr. Jo-Ann Archibald and Janice Novakowski Open to all educators, free of charge.

Understanding and Developing Executive Functions in the Classroom

Part 1: December 5 2022, 3:30 – 6:00

This workshop is designed to introduce the concept of executive functions and how to support their development in a classroom setting. Part 1 of the workshop focuses on introducing different aspects of executive functions, how they affect everyday functioning, and strategies to support their development. We will also discuss Get Ready, Do, Done, as a strategy to facilitate the development of executive functions. At the end of Part 1, the participants will be asked to design and implement Get Ready, Do, Done in their classroom. Participants should be ready to share their implementation in Part 2.

The Competing Behaviour Pathway Model: Understanding and Managing Challenging Behaviours

A competing behaviour pathway model is designed to better understand why a challenging behaviour might occur. The model also helps design a comprehensive, multi-component treatment plan to make the challenging behaviours irrelevant, inefficient, and ineffective. At the end of Part 1, the participants will be asked to design and complete a competing pathway diagram for a student they have in mind. Participants should be ready to share their diagram in Part 2.

Mastering Math Manipulatives (K-8)

This professional development opportunity is all about exploring math manipulatives. We will follow two new books published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and look at everything from Cuisenaire rods and base ten blocks to geoboards and pattern blocks. Spring Update: Curriculum Implementation

Core Competencies:

We continue to add resources to the Competencies page to support learning around Self-Assessment of the Core Competencies.

Teachers have requested that a common introduction to the self-assessment be provided by the district. Please see your administrator for the introduction developed with feedback from educators that can be used on K-9 report cards to introduce the self-assessment.

Career Education K-12:

Resource Announcement: Mission Public School District has purchased the following two digital resources for the new K-12 Career Education curriculum.  Stay tuned for learning opportunities in the 2017/2018 school year.

Early Literacy:

Mission Public School District sent a team of six schools to the January 2017 Joyful Literacy conference in Victoria.  A shared learning session took place in April and we received positive feedback from educators who attended the conference.

 

Below are some of the responses from educators trying out the strategies and expressing their needs moving forward:

We would like to continue the conversation about about establishing common goals for reading expectations to support early literacy in our school district.

Calling all K-3 Educators: Please join us at our next Early Literacy meeting at the School Board Office on Tuesday, May 16th, 2:45-4:15. This is an opportunity to participate in the decision-making process to establish common, district-wide standards for reading levels K-Grade 3 which will be implemented September 2017.  Please bring sample resources, past standards/expectations or any other resources that might be useful to the conversation.

Literacy Professional Development Opportunity:

Congratulations to the MPSD educators who applied to attend the Joyful Writing Summit June 2-3 in Vancouver. Applications were due on May 5th to participate in this professional development opportunity.

Roundtable on Assessment: Follow-Up

During the last week of November, we met with three groups of Kindergarten – Grade 9 educators to discuss the challenges and current positive assessment practices in Mission Public School District.

Feedback was gathered from small groups of educators (teachers and administrators) at each Roundtable on Assessment.  They were asked to respond to two questions:

  1. What are the challenges for you in terms of classroom and school-based assessment and/or reporting?
  2. Are there things that are working for you in terms of classroom and school-based assessment that you would like to share?

POPARD Super-Worksop: Self Regulation Skills for School

 

  • This two-day learning session was offered to Educational Assistants, LST, ISP, High and Low incidence support Teachers.

Mission Secondary School:

  • Grade 10-12 teacher facilitators at MSS planned a comprehensive agenda for colleagues to begin exploring the redesigned curriculum.   Please read their agenda and presentation for a glimpse of the learning opportunities that were offered.

Teacher librarians in MPSD now have curriculum support time as part of their role in each school.   They have been sharing resources at staff meetings and on the October 24th curriculum day.

These included: ERAC resources, Siwal Si’wes Digital Library, SD 75 Elementary Virtual Learning Commons and Curriculum Connections.  They are also collaborating with classroom teachers to implement the redesigned curriculum.

Roundtable on Assessment:

As we implement the K-9 redesigned curriculum, we would like to offer some district-wide opportunities to share and learn from one another about assessment practices.  During the week of November 28th – December 1st we will be holding three roundtable-style learning sessions on the topic of assessment.

The goal of the first session is to get feedback from teachers about assessment/reporting concerns, gather ideas for support, and brainstorm future directions.

Please see the details for groups, dates, locations, and times below.  Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

We hope that you can join us for these learning sessions and look forward to listening to your ideas.

October 24 District Curriculum Day

Through discussion at our JEAC meeting and from feedback from various schools we are leaving the planning for each school’s October 24th Curriculum Implementation day up to each individual K-9 school.  Teachers in most schools seem ready and prepared to continue collaborating with colleagues and accessing their school resources, teacher librarians, and our curriculum websites, including Siwal Si’wes to further their learning.

In addition, Siwal Si’wes is offering several professional learning opportunities that some of your staff may want to take advantage of on that day.  (Please see below for details.)

Our structured plans this year focus more on the Grade 10-12 curriculum and we began working with the MSS planning team on September 27th.

Non Instructional Day Interactive Sto:lo Government Presentation

Siwal Si’wes is organizing an Interactive Sto:lo Government Presentation with Peggy Janicki from school district 34, on October 24th from 8:30 – 12:00 at Ecole Heritage Park Middle School Drama Room.

This interactive presentation is designed for teachers of Grades 3 through 12. Learning outcomes: Pre-Contact Sto:lo history, Consensus, Contact, Reservation Law, Indian Residential School, Civilization Act and Present day. This presentation will provide teachers with lesson plans (including handouts) and a greater understanding of the Sto:lo people.

Welcome Back to Learning!

Our team is looking forward to learning with you this year!  Here is a glimpse of what we accomplished together last year and some of the opportunities as we move forward with implementing the redesigned curriculum in 2016/2017.

2015/2016 Year in review:

  • Re-establishment of the JEAC planning committee;
  • Selection of 28 K-9 teacher planners who attended two planning days and coordinated two curriculum implementation days;
  • District supported two collaboration days for teachers to work with colleagues to explore the redesigned curriculum;
  • Aboriginal mentor teacher presentations at February 22nd NID, resources from the Siwal Si’wes Library highlighted;
  • Reconciliation tour of St. Mary’s Residential School on May 2nd with a waiting list for 2016/2017 school year;
  • Print and digital resources being shared on our district learning commons “Curriculum Connections” (10 000+ views, 200 Tweets sharing strategies/ resources/community events)Tweet4Tweet3Tweet2

  • Educators from each school attended a tour of the Stave West area and Zajac Ranch where they shared ideas for using the space for Outdoor Education initiatives;
  • Print resource ‘Invent to Learn’ purchased for every school to help support the new K-12 Applied Design Skills and Technologies curriculum. In addition, some teacher librarians attended a four week Makerspace webinar series and are curating resources and ideas for maker-oriented activities;
  • Two after-school learning sessions offered by the Curriculum Department focused on technology integration and resource strategies;
  • District partnership with The Critical Thinking Consortium enables teachers to access high quality digital learning resources. Binders of “The Competency Toolkit” were purchased for each school with over 70 lessons focused on thinking and literacy skills embedded into content areas.

What’s New:

Launching Fall 2016:

  • CALM: A self-regulation curriculum developed by the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre.  Training will be provided to Kindergarten teachers and Strong Start Coordinators on September 9th.
  • Assessment Committee: We plan to establish an assessment committee in September. The goal of this committee will be to share assessment practices, gather resources and co-develop community goals for assessment tools that support the redesigned curriculum.
  • Curriculum Implementation Planning: JEAC and teacher facilitators will plan our October 24thNID for both K-9 and 10-12 groups.
  • Technology Committee: Will be established September 2016.

Purpose:

  1. Set broad educational goals and direction for students at all grade levels with the use of technology;
  2. Establish a vision of seamless integration of IT into instruction in a variety of course and subject areas;
  3. Ensure sustainability and stability of IT throughout the district; and
  4. Plan IT purchasing throughout the district in an organized and logical manner.
