What is Next?
As British Columbia moves towards province-wide screening for K-3, it is important to consider how to use data to inform planning and instruction. Becoming a skilled reader is complex and involves the solidification of many basic reading skills (e.g., phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension).
Information from screeners can be used to design early intervention for young readers. Information from screeners can also be used to identify the reading skills that an older reader may be struggling with that requires more explicit teaching, review and/or practice.
